How to Create a Sanctuary in Your Family Room

Creating a Sanctuary in Your Family Room
When most of us think of a sanctuary, our minds go straight to the church building. But the truth is, as believers, we are temples of the Holy Spirit. That means the presence of God doesn’t stay behind on Sunday mornings—it’s meant to fill our homes, our families, and even our living rooms.
Your family room doesn’t have to just be a place for TV, toys, and conflict. It can become a sanctuary—a place where your family rests, connects with God, and grows together in His presence.
So how do you create that kind of space? Let me share a few practices that have transformed our own family room into a sanctuary.
1. Set Aside Time for Family Worship
One of the biggest ways we’ve cultivated God’s presence in our home is by having a weekly family worship night.
When our kids were little (five, three, and one at the time), this looked like dancing to worship songs, clapping along, and reading short Bible stories together. It was simple, fun, and age-appropriate.
Now that my kids are teenagers, family worship night looks very different. They might read Scripture, journal, sketch, or spend time praying individually. Other times, we come together to seek the Lord about family decisions—like when we prayed together about whether or not to switch schools.
The format doesn’t matter as much as the intention. What matters is creating space where your kids feel safe to encounter God, ask questions, and express what’s on their hearts.

Pray Together as a Family
Another practice that has shifted the atmosphere in our home is family prayer time.
When the kids were younger, we prayed with them individually at bedtime. But as they got older and started going to bed at different times, we began praying together in the family room before everyone headed off to their evening routines.
That simple shift allowed us to keep prayer central in our home while also inviting the Holy Spirit into our family room. Even a few minutes of intentional prayer together can transform your living space into a sanctuary.
Sanctuary Living Starts with Heart-Centered Parenting
The sanctuary you build in your home flows directly from how you parent. That’s why I’m passionate about helping moms and dads move from a control-based model of parenting to one rooted in heart connection.
God doesn’t parent us by demanding obedience first—He invites us into relationship, and obedience flows from love. Our parenting should reflect that same heart.
✨ This October, I’m launching the Heart-Centered Parenting Cohort, a course designed to help you shift your mindset and create deeper heart connections with your kids.

Final Thoughts
Your family room doesn’t just have to be for screen time, homework, or conflict resolution. It can become a sanctuary—a space marked by worship, prayer, blessing, and honor.
When you invite the Holy Spirit to make His home in your home, your family room can truly become the launchpad for revival in your family.
