Deuteronomy 6 Parenting: Talk About God Always

In Deuteronomy 6:4–9, God gives us a clear picture of how faith is meant to be passed down from generation to generation:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

As parents, we are pivotal in passing along our faith to the next generation. Yet in today’s culture, many families have unintentionally handed over that responsibility to others — schools, churches, or even the world around us. But God’s design is different. He placed parents in a position of spiritual authority and stewardship to teach their children how to know, love, and obey Him.

1. Parenting by Example

Before we can impress God’s Word on our children’s hearts, it must first be impressed on ours. Verse 5 reminds us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength.”
When your children see your authentic love for God expressed through how you speak, forgive, worship, and handle challenges, they learn what real faith looks like.

Faith isn’t meant to be compartmentalized to Sunday mornings. It’s meant to shape every moment — breakfast conversations, school drop-offs, bedtime prayers, and even the hard days.

2. Make Faith Conversations Natural

Deuteronomy 6 invites us to talk about God always — at home, on the go, when we rise and when we rest. That doesn’t mean forced Bible lessons every hour. It means weaving faith naturally into daily life:

  • Share what God showed you in your morning devotional.

  • Pray out loud for wisdom in real-life situations.

  • Talk through your own questions and struggles with your kids.

  • Celebrate answered prayers as a family.

Your openness gives children permission to explore their faith and ask honest questions. It shows them that God is big enough to handle their doubts and faithful enough to meet them in their wonder.

3. Vulnerability Builds Faith

Children need to see that faith isn’t perfect — it’s real. It’s okay for them to hear you say, “I don’t know, but I trust God to show us.” That level of honesty builds trust and helps your kids develop their own relationship with Him.

4. Building Identity in Christ

When we disciple our children daily, we’re giving them the foundation of identity — who they are in Christ, who God is, and how they can trust Him. By the time they leave our homes, they don’t have to go find themselves — they already know whose they are.
