How to Establish Spiritual Rhythms in Your Home (Even When Life Is Busy)

Sep 22, 2025

Have you ever looked at your family’s schedule and thought, “When would we even have time to disciple our kids?” Between school, sports, work, and everything in between, it can feel impossible to slow down long enough to build meaningful spiritual rhythms at home.

I completely understand. We are in the busyness of football, cross-country, a high schooler, being pastors of a church, and more right now. We are busy all the time.

But here’s the truth: God designed family to be the first place of discipleship. And when we intentionally create rhythms that connect our kids with Him, we’re building a foundation that will last for generations.

Why rhythms matter

God Himself designed life with rhythms—seasons, weeks, Sabbaths. When our family life is scattered, so is our discipleship. But when we create intentional rhythms, we invite peace and consistency into our homes.

I love rhythms and routine. It brings stability to my kids, because they know what to expect and consistency. If you feel that your home is chaotic and undisciplined. Establishing a spiritual rhythm can help keep you and your family accountable to practice the spiritual disciplines God has mandated for each of us.

What rhythms can look like:

"But you don't understand. I am too busy." This is the excuse I hear from most people. But it's not a time problem, it's a priorities problem. You will make time for the things you think are most important. And the reality is that if we can't squeeze a few minutes a day, or an hour a week to create a space for the Holy Spirit in our home, why do we expect God to bless us. It times intentionality, it takes sacrifice, and it takes a willingness to partner with the Holy Spirit to do what works for your family. Here are some examples of spiritual rhythms that you can start today:

    • A weekly family worship night (one of the most transformative practices in my own home). Check out the FREE Raising Worshippers Course HERE to learn how to start a family worship night this week!

    • Sunday mornings at church, midweek gatherings, or even simple family meals around the table.

    • Fun traditions like “pizza + movie Fridays” that create joy and connection.

    • Family prayer before school or in the car.

Where to start

Making the choice to start is the first step. It's not going to be easy. But it will be worth it. God will reward your faithfulness to be intentional to start investing in your children's spiritual lives. Here are some ways you can start:

  1. Submit your calendar to God. Ask Him: Does this glorify You? What needs to go? What needs to stay?

  2. Invite your family into the conversation. Kids—even teenagers—want to be part of decisions that affect their spiritual life. Involving them builds ownership.

  3. Start small. Even praying before dinner or reading one verse together daily can establish a rhythm that grows.

The days we have with our kids are short. But when we establish spiritual rhythms at home, we create traditions that ripple into future generations.

To help you begin, I created a free Ebook, God’s Design for Families, where I walk through practical ways to anchor your home in God’s blueprint.
