God's Design for Families: How To Set Holy Spirit Led Goals
Mar 09, 2026
God’s Design for Your Family
We live in a culture that constantly pushes against the family unit.
From fatherlessness to overworked and overwhelmed mothers, the enemy has strategically targeted the very structure God designed to reflect His image. But when we go back to Scripture, we see something powerful:
In Book of Genesis 1, God says, “Let Us make man in Our image.” The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—three in one—designed humanity to reflect divine relationship.
Male and female together reflect the multifaceted nature of God.
The nurturing, intimate, life-giving strength often expressed through a mother.
The equipping, affirming, identity-calling strength often expressed through a father.
Both matter.
Both reflect Him.
Both are needed.
Your Family Is Not Accidental
Your family is not random.
The specific people in your home were chosen by God for specific good works. In Epistle to the Ephesians 2:10, we are called God’s masterpiece, created for good works prepared in advance for us to do.
That doesn’t just apply to individuals.
It applies to families.
Your family has a collective purpose.
Not just to survive.
Not just to launch successful kids.
Not just to pay bills and get through the week.
But to accomplish something in the Kingdom—together.
Why We Do a Yearly Family Summit
Every year, we host what we call a Family Summit.
We sit down together and ask:
-
What is God saying about our family this year?
-
What alignment adjustments need to happen?
-
What goals is the Holy Spirit inviting us into?
-
What guardrails do we need to protect unity?
We usually do this around fall break, but the timing doesn’t matter as much as the intention.
Here’s why it’s powerful:
1. It Gives Kids Belonging
When children are invited into vision, they feel valued.
They aren’t just living in the house.
They are contributing to the mission.
2. It Creates Identity and Purpose
Kids who know they belong to something meaningful are less likely to run from home emotionally.
When I was growing up, I couldn’t wait to leave home. It didn’t feel safe. It didn’t feel purposeful.
But when you build a home where children feel:
-
Unconditionally loved
-
Safe to have hard conversations
-
Equipped to work through conflict
-
Valued for their contribution
They don’t just want out.
They feel rooted.
3. It Builds Alignment
Just this week during family worship, I sensed the Holy Spirit saying we were out of alignment.
As we prayed, we realized there was tension between siblings. We paused. We reconciled. We restored unity.
Alignment matters.
When a family is unified, it moves forward in power.
When there is division, momentum stalls.
Guardrails protect unity.
How to Set Family Goals with the Holy Spirit
If you’ve never done this before, start simple:
Step 1: Seek the Lord Together
Ask:
-
What is our family called to focus on this year?
-
Where are we out of alignment?
-
What needs strengthening?
Step 2: Identify 3–5 Clear Goals
These could be:
-
Spiritual (weekly worship night)
-
Relational (intentional sibling time)
-
Missional (serving together monthly)
-
Financial (saving toward a shared vision)
Step 3: Create Guardrails
Guardrails aren’t control.
They are protection.
Examples:
-
No devices at dinner.
-
Weekly check-in conversations.
-
Immediate reconciliation when conflict arises.
Step 4: Revisit and Realign
Alignment isn’t a one-time event.
It’s ongoing.
The Holy Spirit will highlight adjustments throughout the year.
You Were Designed for More Than Survival
God didn’t design your family just to make it.
He designed your family to reflect Him and advance His Kingdom in a unique way.
When you begin to see your home as the first church your children belong to, everything shifts.
Your dining table becomes an altar.
Your living room becomes a training ground.
Your conflicts become discipleship opportunities.
Your unity becomes warfare against division.
This is how we build Kingdom families.
