The Power of Speaking Life and Identity Over Your Children
As Christian parents, we are called to do more than simply raise “good kids.” We’re called to raise sons and daughters who know who they are in Christ, and one of the most powerful ways we do that is by speaking life and identity over them every single day.
The world is constantly trying to define your children — telling them who they are, what they’re worth, and what they can (or cannot) be. But as parents, we are the first voices they should hear speaking truth into their lives. Our words carry weight. They build their identity. And they shape how our children see God, themselves, and their purpose.
Life or Death: The Power of Your Words
Scripture tells us that “life and death are in the power of the tongue.” As parents, we can either reinforce the lies the world is shouting — or we can become God’s mouthpiece, declaring His truth over our kids.
From the time they’re young, children internalize messages like:
-
“I’m not good enough.”
-
“I always mess things up.”
-
“Nobody likes me.”
These lies take root early, and if they go unchallenged, they can become the foundation of their identity. That’s why our words are more than encouragement — they are spiritual weapons against the lies of the enemy.
Practical Ways to Speak Life Over Your Kids
1. Start with simple encouragement.
Telling your children, “I love you,” “I’m proud of you,” and “Good job” might seem small, but they’re foundational. Many adults still carry wounds from never hearing those words spoken over them. Be intentional about speaking them often — especially in moments of both success and struggle.
2. Replace lies with truth.
Identity is not just what we feel about ourselves — it’s what God says about us. Teach your kids to replace lies with Scripture:
-
“I am chosen.” (John 15:16)
-
“I am adopted into God’s family.” (Ephesians 1:5)
-
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
3. Create daily rhythms of blessing.
One powerful practice is declaring identity statements together each morning. In our home, before school, we raise our hands and speak truths like: “I am loved. I am chosen. I am equipped for good works.” Over time, these truths become part of your child’s inner voice.
From Peasant to Prince: Helping Kids See Themselves as Royalty
The Bible says that we are “co-heirs with Christ.” That means your children are not peasants trying to earn God’s favor — they are sons and daughters of the King. And yet, so many still live with a “slave” or “victim” mentality.
As parents, part of our role is to help them see the spiritual reality: they have access to God’s promises, protection, and provision because of who their Father is. When their identity shifts from “I’m not enough” to “I am a child of God,” everything changes.
Discipleship Tools That Reinforce Identity
Speaking life isn’t just about words — it’s also about the tools we use to disciple our kids. That’s why I created The Armor Series — a collection of Christian fiction books that use story to teach biblical truth and identity.
-
Book 1: The Sword & The Spirit – Teaches the Armor of God from Ephesians 6.
-
Book 2: The Sword & The Stones – Helps kids understand what it means to put on the new nature of Christ from Colossians 3.
-
Book 3: The Cornerstone – Explores Jesus as our firm foundation from Ephesians 2.
These books open the door for discipleship conversations — helping kids connect biblical truth with real-life struggles. And because they’re written as engaging adventures, they resonate deeply with kids and teens who might otherwise tune out.
👉 Tip: Make reading The Armor Series a family discipleship activity. Discuss the story together and connect the characters’ growth to what Scripture says about identity and purpose.
Final Thoughts
The world will do everything it can to tear your children down. But you get to be the voice that builds them up — the voice that reminds them who they are and whose they are.
Start small. Speak life. Declare God’s Word over them daily. And use discipleship tools that reinforce those truths in creative ways.
